Statement

I use the emotive quality of color to draw the reminiscence of a landscape. I am interested in creating a sense of space, openness and light.  My goal is to communicate the impact of nature, rather than creating a representational drawing. I use light-fast (non-fading) colored pencils on archival museum board and paper.  Colored pencils provide the power of color while showing the mark of the artist’s hand. You will see thousands of strokes. This is a meditative process. Quiet and calm fills my studio.

bio

Jan knew from a young age her future was in visual art. When she discovered abstractions by Klee and O’Keeffe, and Color Field paintings by Rothko and Frankenthaler, she knew she had found her calling. Those early influences are now mixed with inspirations from nature. Jan uses the universal visual language of emotive color and the architecture of design. Her voice speaks of the natural world around us while using thousands of strokes of color.  Jan taught in a college art department for over 30 years. She is an award-winning author and illustrator. Jan lives in Seattle.
